Dublin EPT Event to Help Homeless
August 14, 2007 - Chris Welsh
Poker has always had a bit of a shady reputation of the "smokyback room" and rough- and- tumble sort, but that has been changing over the years thanks to a lot of media attention and very polished and professional poker tournaments. The European Poker Tour is one of those professional poker tournaments, and in addition to their spit and polish helping make poker shine, they are organizing a charity event that can do nothing but good for both the charitable recipients and poker itself.
The event is taking place in Dublin and is actually the second time this EPT tourney has been linked to the charity. The European Poker Tour to play in Dublin on 3 November 2007 will be held at the RDS, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4, and players will be contributing not only to the prize pool but also to alieviate the homeless problems of the area.
The buy in is €300 (+€30 fee), one third of which going to homeless charity Simon Dublin. The Simon Poker Tournament was held for the first time last year and saw over 200 players participate. In addition to the players corporate and private donators raised around €50,000 for Simon Dublin and was considered one of the most popular of the events hosted.
Big name players such as Mad Marty Wilson, "El Blonde" Dave Colclough, Nick Leeson, Ken Doherty, Matthew Stevens and Donnacha O'Dea were on hand last year, and many can be expected to show this year as well. The spokesman for the players putting the game together, well known poker pro Padraig
Parkinson, points out that this is a choice opportunity for players to sit down and play poker with some big names without having to pay through the nose to do so. Noel Furlong, who won the event last year, will be on hand to defend his title.
