Heads-Up Poker Championship great for Star Watching
December 28, 2007 - Shaun Appleton

You don't have to break out your telescope and star chart to do a little star gazing – just tune in when NBC airs their National Heads-Up Poker Championship. More than ever celebrities are invited to attend, but the real stars are the poker pros we know and love, 64 of which have been invited to come and play in the next installment.
Sign up now with Full Tilt Poker to take on Phil Ivey.
The NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship was a brilliant idea, a poker TV show that tore away from the typical "hold a poker tournament and film it" idea, at least in a few significant ways. Instead of running an event that anyone can play in if they have the cash, this event is invitational only, and pits players against each other one on one.
Heads up play has been called the most pure form of poker, especially no limit Texas hold'em, and there is plenty of that in this competition.
The 64 players compete against one another and have to win their table to move on to the next round, until it gets down to only two players in the final round. This time they get the best two out of three to win, and the best heads up player is crowned king (or queen, although a woman has yet to win.)
Last year newcomer Paul Waskica beat fairly- newcomer Chad Brown. In the two years prior it was old schoolers competing for the crown – Ted Forrest and Phil Hellmuth, respectively, each of whom had to beat Chris Ferguson, who made it to second two years running.
As for the celebrities, expect to see Jennifer Tilly and Shannon Elizabeth, both stars of the silver screen. Although some might call it cheating, as both have proven themselves more than capable as poker players, but then again that is the point of the event. Also expect to see tons of pros, like Johnny Chan, Phil Ivey, and Gavin Smith, as well as Barry Greenstein, Antonio Esfandiari, Erick Lindgren and the Godfather of Poker himself, Doyle Brunson.
