John Bonetti Profile
April 23, 2006
John Bonetti - John didn't start playing poker when he was 55 years of age. At an age when many corporations are starting to weed people out John got in on the ground floor of a new career playing cards. In 1985 the World Series of poker had grown beyond a curiosity in started on the path to becoming a phenomenon. It was in this year that John was invited to play game of poker by the owner of a company where he used to work as a salesman. He didn't win that game. Fortunately, he didn't follow love with poker. He didn't get up the Debt in the same year entered his first tournament winning nearly $30,000. For someone to go from complete newcomer to tournament champion in under a year shows fantastic poker instincts. From there John has won four World Series of Poker bracelets, forever proving those instincts to be true.
John's health started to decline becoming a cancer sufferer when he was diagnosed in 1992 with not one to two forms of cancer. The horrible disease was attacking his prostate and his spine and John had to manage both the poker career and dealing with this deadly disease. Thankfully, the cancer has gone into remission where it remains to this day, but John still has to watch out for his health. Fellow professional poker player Daniel Negraenu has a great deal of respect for John saying that when he's playing healthy he is the most deadly tournament player alive. John is known for very aggressive style of play and has made the money in two thirds of the World Series of poker Main events that he's entered finishing in third place twice in 1994 and 1996, and in eighth place in 1990.
Because of John's health issues he has had to rely on poker for his income, but fortunately he's pretty darn good at it. Here's hoping John is feeling good enough to be dangerous for years to come.
