Poker Stars just wrapped up their presentation of the World Cup of Poker IV in Barcelona and it was Poker Star team member Greg Raymer who was getting all the attention as Team USA played their way to victory.
In a unique format Poker Stars holds rounds of qualifying events to allow players from all over the world- literally- to play in a global competition. Once the final teams are set the playoffs begin, leading up to the live final event at the Gran Casino Barcelona in Spain, which took place last week.
The four teams playing for the crown were Team USA, Team Canada, Team Romania and Team Iceland. The final results were USA, $100,000; Romania , $60,000; Iceland, $40,000; and Canada, $20,000. The prizes were shared among the five member teams, which included some big name pros as well as some new-name amateurs.
The USA team was captained by 20 year old Floridian Tyler Netter, who is thrilled with his team's victory, and likely the chance to play with Greg Raymer. Raymer's early play and aggressive collecting of chips put Team USA in a commanding lead, and is considered instrumental to the eventual victory.
There were other teams playing in the early rounds in Barcelona, showing some fine poker skills. Teams from Germany, Mexico, Portugal and Ireland were involved, and the whole event was filmed for later broadcast on Sky Sports this year.
Greg Raymer was not the only big name pro on hand- the Team Canada player best known as "Kid Poker", Daniel Negreanu, was there. Daniel is also a Team Poker Stars player, having recently joined that online website's crew.
The Poker Stars World Cup of Poker IV was a huge success, and will likely be repeated next year.
(Editor's Note: You can play Raymer and Negreanu online, and pick up a Poker Stars deposit bonus of 100%!)
