Overall

Sky poker is a brand new and exciting online poker room started by BSKYB.

British Sky Broadcasting is the operator of the UK's largest digital pay television platform and a leading broadcaster of sports, movies, entertainment and news.

They have recently started their own online poker site, Sky Poker.  It is one of the newest major venture poker sites on the internet and not just another skin like many of its competitors.

Having originally launched the site with only the UK in mind, they have started to open their doors to players from many other countries. In addition Sky Poker hold "The Open" tournament every night that is broadcast on Sky channel 846, so you can get famous too. Sky Poker is a great place to learn and hone your Texas Hold'em skills.

Sky Poker had a difficult job of creating a player base from scratch, but they've seemed to acquire a relative wealth of player in a short amount of time. This acquisition has mainly been down to some great tournament offers and the fact that you can appear playing on the Sky Poker Channel 846. Every poker player wants to be a pro and in having this channel it means having a greater feeling that you have made it!

The traffic is predominantly tournament players, though there are cash games running throughout the day. At non peak times there are cash games ranging from microstakes to £2.50/£5. At peak times there are many more tables and higher stakes available. Many of the games are 6 max, however there are full ring games available too.

Sky Poker has a wide mix of ability, many are beginner players, therefore good players should make consistent money at Sky Poker. This should only get better as more beginner players sign up thanks to countless TV promotions.

At present Sky Poker only offers a variety of limits for Texas Holdem however will be adding more games in the future.

The Open gives you a unique proposition; get the chance to become an instant TV star by seeing your hands replayed in the studio, appearing in the leaderboards and see your details brought to life with our statistical and graphical player profiles. You may also win the opportunity to be invited to the studio to take part in The Open!

These tournaments require no cash buy-in but may require you to use Poker Points to enter or have no entry criteria. The prize pool is sponsored by Sky Poker and may consist of anything from cash to prizes such as Sky HD Boxes and subscriptions to Sky TV.

Gameplay

Sky Poker has developed their own software platform and even offers a flash version of their games meaning that you do not have to download anything to play on their website.

The Sky Poker lobby has a very simple design which makes it easy for the user to find what they want quickly. The lobby is also quick to update which is essential for a good poker room. There's a good "buddy" list available too, though unfortunately there's no table stats such as average pot size and flop percentages. A good feature is that all games are played in pounds.

The poker tables have a really fresh design which are easy on the eye and make them fun to play at. Each player can choose his or her own 2D avatars, which don't interfere with the gameplays. There's also a good hand history function which shows what players mucked at showdown.

The software has some neat features, much of it targeted at the beginner player. There's the Hot-O-Meter which gives an opinion on your holdings pre-flop and offers advice like "fold-em" or "on fire".

There are also good online poker video tutorials which are designed to give beginners an introduction to Texas Hold'em.

Rake
The Rake is a service fee that's collected by the house from the hands played during any real money cash game and is calculated as per the table below. Sky Poker operates a no-flop no-drop policy. If a hand is completed without a flop being dealt then no Rake is taken.
