The World Series of Poker is the longest running poker tournament series in the world, awarding coveted WSOP bracelets to the winners that forever serve as declarations of their skill and ability at the card table. The 2008 World Series of Poker will kick off on May 30, 2008 and run though July 17th. The official schedule can be found here.

There are a few changes in the 2008 WSOP that should make the players happy; including the Poker Pavilion's discontinued use as an auxiliary poker room. For the first time Event #1 will be a $10k championship event, which means the 2008 WSOP will begin and end with a lot of attention and a lot of action.

After a wholesale alteration to the format of the World Series of Poker Main Event tournament, the results are in and the ratings indicate that it was a smashing success. While a number of poker fans (not to mention the players competing) were a bit dismayed to learn that they would have to wait an additional 5 months to find out who the ultimate winner is, ESPN has revealed that the end result was definitely worth the wait.

Annette Obrestad Wins World Series of Poker Europe

Betfair player Annette Obrestad is now the youngest person in World Series of Poker history to become a bracelet winner with a victory in London at the inaugural in World Series of Poker Europe. The young Norwegian, who turned 19 the day after winning the event, took home a £1 million prize, on top of singing an endorsement deal with Betfair Poker the day before her win.

It looked as if Jennifer Harman was going to be the first poker player in the world to pick up a World Series of Poker bracelet out side of the United States, but it wasn't to be so. Despite a huge chip lead and a commanding game, that honor was given to Thomas Bihl, who managed to wrest the crown from Harman and win the first ever WSOP Europe event.

While it is true that many predicted this would happen after the UIGEA situation in the US, robust attendance early on this season seemed to indicate that numbers would continue to rise as they have every year in recent history.

Event 49 was the last NLHE preliminary event of the season and was won by Chandrasekhar Billavara. Read on for the top nine finishers. When the 3,151 signed up to play Event 49 (No-Limit Hold'em) and paid their $1,500 buy in, each one of them were hoping to be the final player standing, grasping their new golden WSOP bracelet, but it was Chandrasekhar Billavara for whom the dream came true.

620 players plunked down $1,500 to play WSOP Event 40, a Mixed Hold'em (Limit / No-Limit) game with a $846,300 prize pool. Fred Goldberg's aggressive poker served him well during no limit rounds, and his control was evidenced as he got heads up opponent Rene Mouritsen to push in with an inferior flush on the last hand.

Steamroller Thirds in WSOP Event 37

Event 37, the $2,000 Pot-Limit Hold'em event, could be the birth place of a new poker pro. Bodog regular Yuval Bronshtein, getting plenty of play from his supporting site, picked up a new nickname along with his $100k and third place finish. The Steamroller rolled over Joe Hachem and TJ Cloutier, and showed no mercy for table mate Shannon Elizabeth while on his way to the top.

Only one event report today, a table that started out pretty weak until things got four handed. Then Young Cho made an aggressive all in and called the clock on Michael Ium, who finaly called with a better hand. Cho’s luck was with him, however, and he started to push the table around quite a lot. In the end Cho managed a runner up spot behind Daid Stucke.

WSOP Update Events 17 and 18

Event 17 - $1,000 Ladies World Championship No-Limit Hold'em built a $1,170,260 prize pool with a record breaking field of 1,286 players. Only one pro made it to the final table, German player and PokerStars team member Katja Thater. The winner, however, was Sally Boyer, who picked up $262,077 and a specially designed CORUM bracelet for her victory.

Live Broadcasts and Time Travel

The only way the new broadcasts coming from the World Series of Poker website are live is if you have a time machine and move forward one hour into the future—but “One Hour Delayed!” isn’t as shiny as “Live!” so I guess we have to give them that. Event Six ($1,500 Limit Holdem) was the first live simulcast event this season, delayed to avoid anyone with a laptop and wifi connection in the audience feeding info to final table players about the hole cards.
