When's a poker Pro a real pro?
April 23, 2008 - Shaun Appleton
In the quest to become a professional poker pro you have bought and read every book on the game, played countless hours of online poker, practiced hiding your tells until you're nearly invisible, and mastered poker math. But are you a pro?

Like everything else in poker, the answer to that question is; it depends. According to Phil Gordon, the first poker pro that many people were ever introduced to courtesy of his old show Celebrity Poker Showdown, you are a poker pro when you SAY you are a poker pro.
The thing is many people assume being a poker pro means you have to be Chris Ferguson, sporting World Series of Poker bracelets and hanging out with all the other poker TV personalities. The fact of the matter is being a poker pro is not like being a sports pro - no one hires you to do the job.
The very tip top of the poker pro pyramid will see some endorsement deals, such as being an official pro for an online poker room, but the vast majority of pros out there have no such deals. (And even many of those that do spend a large portion of the year broke due to poor money management skills.)
Can you pay the electricity bill with what you make playing online poker? Then you might be a pro. Being a pro is a state of mind more than a role; it combines the ability to make money consistently, to depend on poker for the majority of your financial support, and to take the game serious enough that you spend the majority of your time playing it.
If you fall into those parameters then congratulations; you can call yourself a poker pro.
