Badugi Comes To PokerStars

PokerStars is now offering this very different style of poker, Badugi, which first started in Asia. The site is running both tournaments and SNGs, although SNGs are not really attracting high stake players. Badugi is one part razz, one part draw poker and is a lot of fun if you know how to play it right.

Many players who played the Badugi SNGs for the first time at PokerStars today said that they will play it again

Badugi is a draw poker game that is similar to lowball, where players try to get the four lowest cards possible, all of different suits. Therefore, A-2-3-4 of different suits would be the best badugi hand a player could get. There are three different drawing opportunities, where players can draw anywhere from zero to four cards, and a betting round occurs after each one.

Only time will tell if the game will become popular online. Doyles Room had offered badugi a couple of years ago but then stopped offering it, since it generated less interest.

PokerStars is clearly induced at maintain interest, setting up small-stakes tourneys throughout the day. A $2.20 buy-in tournament on Sunday got 112 players.

In Las Vegas, players can find a regular mixed-games format at Bellagio, which contains badugi, for as low as $2-$4 and as expensive as $4,000-$8,000. The Imperial Palace poker room features badugi as part of its mixed games, scheduling every Sunday at 7 p.m. Treasure Island also offers an individual $3-$6 badugi game, although there are never many players playing it.

Badugi is an interesting game and many players will find their expertise in it. Pokerstars is doing everything right to promote it and with some more push it will have its fair share of attention amongst online poker players soon.
