Jake Cody would come out in force at the WPT’s first ever London Event. The 21 year old Britain would do his home country proud and give the British fans something to cheer about as he kept the flag flying on their home turf at London’s inaugural WPT event.
This would be Cody’s 2nd big tournament win, proving that he is no one hit wonder kid and a player to be respected on the tournament circuit. Just earlier this year he took down the European Poker Tour’s Deauville Event.
The WPT London final table would not be an easy one either with many big names involved. PartyPoker’s sponsored pro Giovanni Safina would come to the table with the chip lead. With his experience and deep stack, he would be the clear favorite. Safina would run out of gas and end up finishing in 5th place.
Kristoffer Thorsson, another young gun who has made a big name for himself in the poker world, would also make the final table and at one point, looked poised to take the championship. Thorsson has already won the 2009 Master Classics of Poker and over $1 million in prize money. He would fizzle out in 4th as Cody took control of the game.
The final hand of the tournament would see Cody’s QQ up against AQ suited of Nichlas Mattson. Jake's hand would hold and he would take home the £273,783 in prize money. This brings his total live winnings for the year to over $1.5 million.
This win means that Jake Cody, at the age of 21, has already won an EPT and WPT title and is now in prime position to become only the 3rd person ever to win the Triple Crown which would include a WSOP title. Only two other players have won the elusive triple crown – Gavin Griffin and Roland De Wolfe. At Cody’s young age, and with the sheer number of WSOP events every year, it seems like he has a good chance to accomplish this amazing feat.
Poker players from Britain are out in force this year having won a combined total of five WSOP bracelets, three EPT tournaments and one WPT event. Just earlier this week, Britain’s Toby Lewis won the PokerStars EPT Vilamoura Event in Portugal.
