Ivan Demidov is a softly spoken 27-year-old from Moscow in Russia, but he has a chance to beat Alex Kravchenko's 4th place in last year's main event to become the highest placed Russian finisher in the event ever, and perhaps the first Russian to win the event outright.
Demidov has not been involved in too many live events, winning the bulk of his money online. However he has had some success in the last few years to show why he may have started playing a bit more live poker and got so deep in the main event. He came 5th in the $200 Pot Limit Omaha event in the Russian Poker Championships in 2006 and then last year he did well in the Brunson Five-Diamond classic, where he eventually came 3rd winning $21,710.
This year saw his first appearance at the WSOP and before entering the Main Event he managed to cash in the $1,000 No Limit Hold'em event indeed he came 11th and won $39,854. So although being quite an unknown his stats show the obvious promise and skill that he has for the game.
Demidov also showed that he has definitely has had large amounts of success online as he bought himself straight into the $10,000 Main Event not going through any satellites which is now the norm with most players.
Demidov described his appearance on the final table as equivalent to "winning the lottery" showing to all players out there that if this player who has only really been playing since 2006 can make himself a success in the game then surely so can they.
