John Juanda Strikes it Lucky at WSOPE
October 03, 2008 - Thomas Clarke
WIN YOURSELF A SEAT AT THE NEXT WSOPE WITH BLACKPOOL CLUB
Juanda is the first American to win a WSOPE bracelet and his victory in London has ended his own personal drought dating back to 2003. Juanda came into the final table as chip leader and his shrewd and cunning performance throughout landed him his 4th WSOP bracelet.
Juanda faced Russain Stanislav Alekhin heads-up and the mammoth tournament finally came to an end when both players went all in. Juanda turned over K6 and found himself behind to Alekhin's A9. Juanda needed to improve to win the tournament and improve he did, as the flop comes 6 6 2 giving him trips and a stranglehold on the tournament. The turn card is the Q and Alekhin is drawing dead. The case six on the river gives Juanda quads and thus the tournament, clinching him his fourth WSOP bracelet and first since 2003.
"For the last few years, it has been very frustrating not to win a gold bracelet." Said Juanda
"It is not as easy as it used to be,"
Clocking in at a seemingly infinite 19 hours and 10 minutes, this was the longest final table in the 39-year history of the World Series of Poker. Measured in time from start to finish, the duration of this "final nine" exceeded the mind-numbing 16-hours played in the $1,500 buy-in Razz championship, won by O'Neil Longson (29 June 2005).
