Oklahamo Jonny Oklahoma Johnny Hale Profile
26-Feb-2006
Oklahoma Johnny Hale : Entering the poker world in an era where poker nicknames were still being assigned by either a dominate physical feature or the place you hail from, Oklahoma Johnny Hale is known as one of the nicest folk in the poker arena. One of the select group of poker godfathers who helped the legendary Benny Binion launch the World Series of Poker, OK-J, as he is also known, created the Senior World Poker Championship in 1991 and bears a striking resemblance to KFC founder and mascot Colonel Sanders. It’s a good thing Johnny was born in Oklahoma and not Kentucky

Amarillo Slim Amarillo Slim Profile
25-Feb-2006
Amarillo Slim : With a name like Amarillo Slim,  you expect a lot of great stories out of the six foot plus Texan, and you would not be disappointed. If you’ve never heard of him then you are not a regular at the Horseshoe or didn’t catch much of the Tonight Show back when Johnny Carson was at the helm; both places saw plenty of the man born Thomas Austin Preston, Jr, but better known the world over as Amarillo Slim. From the first days of the creation of the World Series of Poker and before, when Slim traveled the roads hunting up action with Doyle Brunson, all the way to when he was kidnapped and held for ransom in a case of mistaken identity, Amarillo has got plenty of tales to entertain.

Puggy Pearson Puggy Pearson Profile
25-Feb-2006
Puggy Pearson : "I'll play any man from any land, any game that he can name, for any amount that I can count (providing I like it)." So reads the legend emblazoned across the RV of one Puggy Pearson, the unsung hero of tournament poker. Thousands of poker fans around the world are making a living today because of the proliferation of poker tournaments, not to mention the huge cash prizes that are to be had; if they but knew it, they all own Puggy a debt of gratitude. Back in the heady days of the first World Series of Poker, when Benny Binnion gathered the best poker players and voted on who is the best, it was Puggy who suggested the freezeout format that is used today the world over. So, for all the tournament players the world over; Thanks, Puggy!

Shana Hiatt in Action Shana Hiatt Profile
24-Feb-2006
Shana Hiatt : Where would the poker world be without the former swimsuit model turned poker hostess Shana Hiatt? As part of the trio of personalities that greeted poker TV watchers on the Travel channel each and every time the World Poker Tour aired, Shana provided the eye candy that helped draw the crowds to the show, and there is no arguing over the influence the World Poker Tour had on the poker world at large. For three seasons she kicked off the show, presented the money, and just all around glittered on stage. The fourth season of the World Poker Tour kicks off without her, and she is gone; but not forgotten.

New Bond Girl, Eva Green Eva Green Profile
23-Feb-2006
Eva Green : Does Eva Green play poker? No clue. But she IS going to be the next Bond girl, and every Bond fan knows that 007 is going to be mixing it up in his newest movie called Casino Royale. Hey, where there’s a casino, can poker be far behind? So, before you go pointing out that there was no reason to include Eva in this poker player database except because she’s a beautiful French actress, keep this in mind okay, never mind, you got us.

Thor Hansen Thor Hansen Profile
18-Feb-2006

Thor Hansen : If there was ever a poker player that did not need a nickname, it has got to be Thor Hansen. Thor! The mighty god of thunder! Of course, it sort of ruins it that Hansen is from Norway; you kind of expect names like Thor from that part of the world. Thor, and Tryggmund, Sigbrand, Yngvald, and Ragnljot; now THOSE would be some awesome poker names. All kidding aside, Thor Hansen is a masterful poker player, good enough to play high stakes cash games and make the rounds at the Hustler Casino. Don’t bother playing at his table and trying to tilt him; it is doubtful he will smash the table with his mystic hammer, Mjolnir, no matter how mad he gets.

Ron Rose Profile
17-Feb-2006
Ron Rose : These days the popular thing to do is to go to college, get hooked on online poker, get really good at it, drop out of college and turn poker playing pro. A news flash for all those youngsters out there contemplating this path; it’s not the only way to poker greatness. Ron Rose had lived a very full life before he decided to make a go of turning pro, and there is no doubting his success after making the decision. Winning the World Poker Tour’s 2003 Battle of Champions against a field of the best in the game is no small victory, and one that Ron admits is his favorite of all time.

Ted Forrest Ted Forrest Profile
16-Feb-2006
Ted Forrest: With the speed at which newly minted poker players are winning these days you simply have to be a presence at the World Series of Poker three years running to be considered an “old pro.” In Ted Forrest’s case, his status as long term pro comes the old fashioned way, through two decades of playing and winning at poker. Pay attention, youngsters!

Charlie Shoten Profile
16-Feb-2006
Charlie Shoten : Sometimes success pushes you where you were not prepared to go, and you only have two choices; adapt or fail. For Charlie Shoten, this may have been one of the defining moments in his philosophical life, as he is known for teachings on going with the flow and accepting change as a good thing. Yet, when he was becoming a fairly consistent winner he didn’t want his real name known; he played under the alias "Scotty Warbucks" (no one said it was a good alias). When he was so successful at poker than he ended up on televised tournaments, his real name was known. Scotty became Charlie, and he followed his own advice, to give up and let go of what you are NOT.

Tony Tony Bloom Profile
15-Feb-2006
Tony Bloom : The late Rodney Dangerfield often complained that he “got no respect” from…well, anyone. Respect is something that many consider more precious than gold, and if you can get it from someone highly placed, super skilled and known more for handing out scathing, whining insults more than complements, you must be doing something right. Tony Bloom once played in a game with Phil Hellmuth (you know, the Poker Brat?) who, after seeing Bloom eliminated, told him he had great respect for Bloom’s game. High praise, indeed. Unless, that is, Tony had gotten his hands on Phil’s nine WSOP bracelets and was holding them ransom…

Chip Jett Chip Jett Profile
14-Feb-2006
Chip Jett : You know you are good at something when you can make enough money at it to pay cash for your first home. At age nineteen. Such is Chip Jett, a man who needs no nickname (how can you do better than “Chip” for a poker player? That would be like giving Chris Moneymaker the nickname “Aces.” You can’t improve on it.) Chip has been involved with poker since 18 years of age, makes his living playing poker; heck, even his wife makes a living playing poker.

Hasan Habib Hasan Habib Profile
14-Feb-2006
Hassan Habib : Sometimes it is fun to imagine what the pro poker players are listening to on their iPods. You might imagine Phil Hellmuth topping his list with “It’s My Party (and I’ll Cry If I Want To)” or Phil Ivey with “Eye of The Tiger” (you know, for that stare..) and Antonio Esfandiari with Heart’s “Magic Man.” If Hassan Habib has those white ear buds plugged into his ears one could easily put Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” on the soundtrack. Habib is known for his relaxed, Devil May Care attitude at the table, playing as if he hadn’t a care in the world. “Dooo do do dodle do da doddle do da doddle do …”

Brad Pitt Brad Pitt Profile
11-Feb-2006
Brad Pitt : Can Brad Pitt play poker? Can he play poker well? That’s a good question, as he has not followed the crowd of Hollywood celebrities to the felt, either in live games or poker TV shows such as Hollywood Home Game or Celebrity Poker Showdown. However, he’s a decent actor (can you detect the deliberate ironic undertones?) and actors have a leg up when playing poker. In all actuality, it really doesn’t matter if he is a good player or not; after his poker game scenes in Ocean’s Eleven and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, he will forever be perceived as one of the coolest poker players around. Now, if he can just avoid anyone watching him play…

The Hendon Mob Profile | Background on The Hendon Mob The Hendon Mob Profile
10-Feb-2006
The Hendon Mob : Picture it; four men in dark suits and dark glasses arrive, exiting expensive sports cars and moving together as a group into a casino. If you aren’t thinking “Mobsters” then you are not properly educated on 20th century gangster movies. Before there was poker TV, before there were instant poker celebrities launched by pumped up drama on pro poker circuits, there was the Hendon Mob. These four players, who are not a team but a family, formed around a love for the game of poker, made a name for themselves when they would travel together to poker events all across Europe. As they made individual wins and got to be known separately, they were also recognized as a close-knit group. “Here comes the Hendon Mob,” people would say, knowing the group lived in Hendon. The name stuck, and The Hendon Mob was born.

George Clooney George Clooney Profile
10-Feb-2006
George Clooney: If there is one thing you could say about Hollywood superstar George Clooney, it’s that he can poke fun at himself. After the disaster that was “Batman and Robin”, George was heard to say that he was the only one who could kill Batman. While Batman fans are inclined to agree with him, there is actually a lot more to say about this former ER star; he is wealthy, handsome, talented, conscientious, honest and has movie-star hair. With that kind of package, he was once asked if he ever considered a political career, to which he replied; “Run for office? No. I’ve slept with too many women, I’ve done too many drugs, and I’ve been to too many parties.” Well. Don’t hold anything back, George.
