What is going on "Tilt"?
Going on Tilt is a phrase that describes when a player lets his own frustrated emotions take over their usual poker strategy. The case in which this most usually occurs is when the player suffers a bad beat.
For example they are dealt pocket Aces and lose a hand to pocket 2s or worse than this. There are also cases such as folding a hand to a bet and then finding out that they would have won if they had called. Having an aggressive player on their table abuse them verbally or it could even be a case of having not enough sleep or too much to drink.
Whatever may be the circumstances, the outcome is always the same, overly aggressive player on Tilt will lose their money and fast!
Try to recognise when you are on Tilt
The best players will be able to identify when players are on Tilt and use it to their advantage to win as many of that player's chips as possible. Therefore it is vital that you recognise when you are going on Tilt. Try to identify your own betting patterns and pause and take a breath before you make a move if you feel yourself getting overly frustrated.
What can you do to stop yourself from going on Tilt?
If you are sitting at home playing online, don't throw your laptop out of the window, because that is just going to annoy you more. A great tactic is to simply log off for ten minutes or until you have calmed down.
If you are in an online tournament set your status for away and go and get a drink or take a walk. Even if you miss getting dealt a monster hand the chances are that you would play it badly because of your mental state. If you are playing in a casino get a drink from the waitress and try to concentrate on something other than the cards such as people in the casino.
Tilt is something that happens to most players and the more you can identify it the better you can do in controlling your own emotions and helping your game, and the better you can identify other players who are on Tilt the better chance of winning their chips.
